Broad Peak A Climbing History and Routes Overview
The first successful climb of Broad Peak was made on June 9 1957 by an Austrian team. The climbers were Fritz Winterstelle Marcus Schmuck Kurt Diemberger and Hermann Buhl, and the expedition was led by Marcus Schmuck. What made their climb special was that they did it without using bottled oxygen without hiring high-altitude porters and without extra support at base camp.
The standard climbing route starts by going through a rocky gully to reach Camp I at about 6,000 meters. From there climbers move up a large snow slope to reach Camp II at around 6,400 meters. The final camp is set at 7400 meters, which is the launching point for the summit push. The climb is not very steep technically, but because Broad Peak is in a remote area, it offers a real sense of adventure and challenge.Whether it’s your first 8,000-meter mountain or your third, Broad Peak provides a unique and unforgettable experience.
Winter Expeditions and Other Notable Climbs
Broad Peak has seen many winter attempts since 1987/88 when Andrzej Zawada a famous Polish climber and a pioneer in winter climbing led the first international winter expedition to K2. The team included climbers from Poland, Canadaand the UK. While they didn’t reach the top of K2, two members, Aleksander Lwow and Maciej Berbeka, tried to climb Broad Peak. They managed to reach the Forepeak, but not the main summit.
In July 2005 a new route up the Southwest Face was completed by Denis Urubko and Serguey Samoilov in alpine style (meaning fast and light without fixed camps or ropes. Then in 2008, Valery Babanov and Victor Afanasiev climbed a different variation of the West Face also in alpine style.
