Altitude: 3,103 meters

Trekking Time: 6–8 hours

Distance: 20KM

The first day of trekking brings us down a meandering track along the Braldu River, passing through minor streams and suspension bridges. The terrain is rough, dusty, and exposed to the sun, therefore sun protection is required. We’ll journey through farms and summer towns, taking in the breathtaking contrast of bleak cliffs and verdant fields. The day’s climb concludes at Jhola, a semi-arid campsite along a glacial stream. Optional treks surrounding Paiju allow you to explore the nearby slopes and see panoramic views of the Baltoro Glacier. This is also a good day to go over glacier trekking methods and make sure your gear particularly your boots and gaiters is ready.

Trekking through this area is bizarre, with views of the Trango Towers, Uli Biaho, and other granite giants rising suddenly from the ice. The camp at Khoburtse is located on a lateral moraine surrounded by rocky peaks. The environment is raw and exhilarating, providing a true flavour of the Karakoram wilderness

After lunch, you can rest, journal your adventure thus far, or hike around for acclimatization.

Trek to Concordia – The Throne Room of the Mountain Gods

Altitude: 4,512 meters

Trekking Time: 5–6 hours

This is one of the most memorable days of the trip. As we progress deeper into the Karakoram, the towering peaks of Broad Peak, Mitre Peak, and Gasherbrums appear ahead of us. Then comes the dramatic moment—arrive at Concordia, a natural amphitheatre encircled by four 8000-meter peaks, including the formidable K2. Every trekker is left awestruck by the sheer majesty of this region, with glaciers flowing in all directions and snow-capped giants towering overhead. All the Karakoram giants you have been looking at from a faraway are now right in front of you. You are surrounded by the mighty Gasherbrum II (8,035m/26,361ft), III (7,952m/26,089ft) & IV (7,925m/26,000ft), Mitre Peak, Chogolisa (7,665m/25,147ft), Broad Peak (8,047m/26,401ft), and visible for the first time, the second-highest mountain on the earth after Everest, the spectacular K2 (8,611m/28,251ft). Concordia has a much wider area, so there is plenty of space to set up your tent. This place can be windy in the evening, so wear many layers of clothes to keep yourself warm. Set up your camp at Concordia and spend a night in your sleeping bag with spectacular views, which you will not find anywhere else.

Broad Peak rises to our right and after about three hours we cross Broad Peak base camp. We normally stop here for lunch before continuing on with K2 towering over us as we approach closer. Many Adventure companies do not take you beyond Concordia. Still this adventure holiday is incomplete without visiting the actual K2 base camp. After all this is a base camp trek, so you must see the K2 base camp. Enjoy your base camp day and spend the evening at Broad Peak Base Camp.Participants can stay at Concordia or trek to Broad Peak Base Camp and K2 Base Camp The Art Gilkey Memorial is located just before base camp, among the rock and ice-strewn landscape. A little scramble takes us to the location where those whose lives K2 claimed are remembered. Plaques and etched tin plates are affixed to a small rocky outcrop at the base of this massive mountain. There are excellent views of K2 immediately above us, and we may even see some climbing excursions. We spent the night in K2’s base camp.

Trek to Ali Camp

Altitude: 5,000m

Trekking Time: 6–7 hours

Weather: Very cold, windy; snow and ice expected

We begin our journey towards Gondogoro La. The track leads southeast onto the Vigne Glacier. It’s a long hike across rough ice and snow. The campsite is basic and situated near a steep slope. Cross Gondogoro La Pass and Trek to Khuspang

Altitude: 5,585m (Pass), 4,600m (Khuspang)

Trekking Time: 8–10 hours

Weather: Very cold; wind chill, deep snow possible

A demanding but rewarding day! We begin before daybreak to safely scale the Gondogoro La. The trail is steep and has roped sections. At the summit, a spectacular 360° panorama shows K2, Gasherbrum I and II, Broad Peak, and Laila Peak. We then carefully descend to Khuspang. Crampons and harnesses are required. Crossing Gondogoro La is one of the most exciting and demanding days of the K2 trek. It’s a real adventurebut the view from the top makes it all worth it. When you reach the pass you’ll be rewarded with something few people in the world ever see: K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II all visible at once. And as you turn around, you’ll see the deep Hushe Valley stretching out below, with the beautiful Laila Peak stealing the spotlight. Depending on the weather and snow, we may need to use ropes and safety gear to cross parts of the glacier. In some places fixed ropes are already set up to help you climb safely. If conditions are good, it usually takes 4 to 5 hours to reach the top where the views open up and take your breath away. At the summit the ground is wide and open but just beyond it, the terrain drops fast into the valley below. On this side, you’ll see dramatic rock faces and the elegant Laila Peak standing tall in front of you. Further down the glacier, you might catch a glimpse of the striking Masherbrum II shaped like a perfect cone. Going down the Hushe side of the pass is steep and can be tricky. The top part is snowy and steep and lower down you’ll walk on loose rocks. But once we reach Khuspang, a peaceful green campsite you can finally relax and look back on one of the most thrilling days of the trek. To make sure everyone stays safe a local rescue team from Hushe village will be waiting at Ali Camp. They are trained to assist trekkers across the pass and have years of experience. The cost for their service$120–130USD per person is already included in your trek packageso no extra payment is needed.

15

Trek to Saicho

Altitude: 3,350m

Trekking Time: 6–7 hours

Weather: Warmer; dry air

We descend down into the lush Hushe Valley. The trail winds through trees and tiny farms, with Saicho marking the end of the glacier region. This is a popular camping with clean water and beautiful rock towers nearby.

The walk to Shaicho is a refreshing change after days in the high mountains. Along the way we pass quiet  pastures and see the first green trees since Paiju reminding us that we’re finally heading back to lower ground.

Shaicho itself is a small peaceful village. As we descend further the air feels warmer and richer, and the landscape slowly comes back to life. The trees grow taller the grass returns and we leave the rocky moraines behind.

We’ll camp at Saitcho (3,350m) a wide sandy area with patches of grass, located beside a river where the Gondogoro and Charakusa valleys meet. After nearly a week above 4,000 meters, this will be our first night back in oxygen-rich air a welcome change that helps us rest better. You’ll fall asleep to the calming sound of the river, surrounded by soft earth and growing life once again.

FAQs About K2 Base Camp & Gondogoro La Trek

The K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La Trek is a challenging high-altitude trekking adventure in the Karakoram. The trek involves long walking days, glacier terrain, significant elevation gain, cold conditions, and the demanding crossing of Gondogoro La at 5,585 meters. Good physical fitness, previous trekking experience, and proper acclimatization are strongly recommended.

The trek is located in the Karakoram mountain range of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The route travels through the Baltoro Glacier region, Concordia, K2 Base Camp, Broad Peak Base Camp, and the Gondogoro La pass before descending toward Hushe Valley.

K2 Base Camp is located at approximately 5,150 meters above sea level. It lies beneath K2, the world’s second-highest mountain at 8,611 meters, and is reached after trekking through the spectacular Baltoro Glacier and Concordia region.

Gondogoro La reaches approximately 5,585 meters above sea level. The pass is one of the most challenging sections of the trek and provides spectacular views of K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and surrounding Karakoram peaks.

The planned K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La Trek itinerary takes 21 days. It includes arrival in Islamabad, travel to Skardu and Askole, the Baltoro Glacier approach, acclimatization, K2 Base Camp and Broad Peak Base Camp visits, the Gondogoro La crossing, descent to Hushe, and the return journey to Islamabad. The schedule may change because of weather, transportation, route conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances.

The trek starts in Islamabad, where participants are welcomed at the airport and transferred to their accommodation. After preparation and acclimatization in Skardu, the group travels by jeep toward Askole, which is the main trekking starting point for the Baltoro Glacier route.

The standard route travels from Askole through Jhola, Paiju, Khoburtse, Urdukas, Goro II, and Concordia. From Concordia, the trek continues toward Broad Peak Base Camp, Gilkey Memorial, and K2 Base Camp before returning to Concordia and continuing toward Ali Camp and Gondogoro La. The route then descends through Khuspang, Dalsampa, Saicho, and Hushe.

The Gondogoro La crossing is one of the most demanding sections of the trek. The pass reaches approximately 5,585 meters and involves steep, exposed high-altitude terrain. Conditions can be extremely cold, and the crossing requires good physical fitness, appropriate equipment, careful pacing, and guidance from an experienced trekking team. The route may be adjusted or the crossing may be avoided if conditions are considered unsafe.

The trek is not recommended for completely inexperienced trekkers. Participants should have good physical fitness and preferably previous experience with multi-day trekking and high-altitude environments. The Gondogoro La section is particularly demanding, so participants must be comfortable with long trekking days, steep terrain, cold conditions, and significant altitude.

Additional equipment may be required for the Gondogoro La crossing depending on current route and weather conditions.

The trek provides views of some of the world’s most spectacular Karakoram peaks. Depending on weather and visibility, trekkers can see K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and other major peaks surrounding Concordia and the Baltoro Glacier.

The main trekking season generally falls during the summer months when conditions in the Karakoram are more suitable for high-altitude trekking. The exact timing of the Gondogoro La crossing depends on snow conditions, weather, route accessibility, and the assessment of the trekking team.

Accommodation includes hotels in Islamabad and Skardu in shared twin rooms. During the trekking section, participants stay in camps using expedition-style camping equipment. A kitchen and dining tent are also provided as part of the trekking support services.

Full-board meals are provided during the trekking portion of the journey, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. An authorized support team, including cooks and helpers, prepares meals for the trekking group.

Yes. Trekking permits and applicable national park fees are included in the trek services. The expedition support team also handles the required local trekking logistics and arrangements.

High-altitude conditions in the Karakoram can change quickly. Flights, road journeys, trekking schedules, and the Gondogoro La crossing may be affected by weather, snow, or route conditions. The trekking team will assess conditions and may adjust the itinerary when necessary for safety.
